Seven reasons to love winter in Two Rocks

It’s the dreaded ‘w’ word that us Reefers usually dread – winter! Living on the Indian Ocean, we’re used to sunny days with our toes in the sand, cooling off in the turquoise waters and soaking up all the good vibes warm weather has to offer.

It’s not all that surprising for our spirits to drop as the mercury plummets! Yet while our first thought is to hibernate until summer rolls around again, are we missing the chance to embrace the cool change?

We’ve compiled a list of seven must-do coastal activities to turn Two-Rocks into a winter wonderland!

1. Watching the storms roll in
Wild winds. Angry swells. Crashing waves. Fresh salty air. Our endless horizons make watching those dark and menacing storms rolling in a must-see spectacle. Whether watching it from the comfort of a local café or packing a thermos of Milo and braving the elements rugged up on the beach, winter storm watching is a feast for the senses. Love photography? This is your chance to capture a side to Two Rocks you’ve never seen before.

2. Surf some winter waves
Two Rocks has some great surfing spots that really step it up a notch in winter, namely ‘The Spot’ and ‘Durrs Surf Spot’. Keep an eye on the conditions, and wait for some serious swell to pick up – the water may be a little chilly, but the ride’ll be worth it!

3. Take a midday beach stroll
While our pristine beaches are made for hot summer days, going for long walks while the sun beats down can be a tad uncomfortable! So make the most of the mild winter days by taking a midday stroll under a low, lazy sun. We’ve got endless sandy white beaches to choose from, including a fantastic dog beach for those with four-legged friends.

4. Cast a line
Don’t let the wintery conditions stop your fishing - rug up and get out to the coast for a fish while nobody else is! Winter actually delivers ideal conditions that bring fish closer to shore. So whether fishing the marina or beaches you can expect to reel in plenty of ‘bread and butter’ species all year round in Two Rocks. And for those targeting tailor, while numbers often drop a little in the winter months, the good news is that the bigger, juicier tailor tend to hang around. Get in your 4x4 and hit the northern beaches, keeping an eye out for gutter formations.

5. Explore local cafés
What could be better than settling in at a cosy café with a great book to read and a steaming hot mug of coffee? With a handful of great venues to pick from, Two Rocks town is the perfect place to let the hours drift away, all tucked away safe and warm from the gloomy weather outside.

6. Hit up a round of golf
Nestled between the Yanchep National Park and Lagoon Foreshore, Sun City Country Club comes alive in winter, making it a great opportunity to tee off amidst lush fairways and natural surroundings.

7. Venture out to the country
Rainy days are perfect for getting in the car and heading for the hills. The Chittering region is just an hour’s drive inland, making it perfect for a weekend daytrip or a mini winter getaway. The country really comes to life in the cooler months, with rolling green hills, orchards, vineyards and farms to discover, an outdoor art trail, heritage and crafts. Venture a little further north and you’ll find Australia’s only monastic town, New Norcia - a historic and spiritual treasure where you can meet a monk and discover their unique history and lifestyle.
